Notes: Inspired by a true story about President Theodore Roosevelt

Once upon a time, in the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt—known by friends as "Teddy"—was a man who loved adventure and the great outdoors. Whether it was riding horses or camping under the stars, Teddy had a deep connection with nature. He also loved a good hunt, and one day, his friends invited him on a bear hunting trip in Mississippi.

The group set off into the woods, tracking bears through dense forests and muddy swamps. Day after day, the hunters found success, but the President himself hadn't seen a single bear. His friends were determined not to let him leave empty-handed. After much searching, they finally found a small black bear wandering alone. They captured it, tied it to a tree, and invited Teddy over, telling him to take the first shot.

But when Teddy arrived and saw the poor, frightened bear, he shook his head. "I can't shoot this bear," he said. "That wouldn't be fair or sporting." With a wave of his hand, he ordered the bear set free, despite protests from his hunting companions.

News of Teddy's act of kindness spread like wildfire. Newspapers across the country picked up the story, and it wasn't long before a cartoonist named Clifford Berryman drew a sketch of Roosevelt refusing to shoot the little bear. People loved the story, and one toymaker saw an opportunity. He decided to create a stuffed bear in honor of the President's compassion. The little bear was soft, cuddly, and quickly became a favorite among children.

When the toymaker asked Roosevelt for permission to use his name, the President laughed and said, "Sure, you can call it 'Teddy's Bear.'" And just like that, the teddy bear was born! From that day on, children everywhere hugged their new furry friends, grateful for the tale of the President who had a heart as big as the great outdoors.

And so, whenever you hold a teddy bear close, you can remember that even the toughest people have room for kindness and compassion.
