It was a cold November night in 1966 when two young couples, driving through an abandoned World War II munitions plant outside Point Pleasant, West Virginia, saw something they would never forget.
Their headlights caught something—something big. At first, they thought it was a man, standing near the road. But as they got closer, the figure spread two massive wings, its red eyes glowing like burning coals in the darkness. It let out an eerie screech, then shot straight into the sky.
Terrified, they sped back to town, but the creature followed them, keeping up with their car even at high speeds. When they finally reached safety, they told the sheriff, who dismissed it as a trick of the light or a large bird.
But they weren't the only ones to see it.
Over the next year, more and more people in Point Pleasant reported sightings of the Mothman—perched on bridges, lurking near homes, even chasing cars down lonely roads. Some said it was an omen, a warning of something terrible to come.
And they were right.
On December 15, 1967, tragedy struck. The Silver Bridge, packed with holiday shoppers, suddenly collapsed into the icy waters of the Ohio River, killing 46 people. In the aftermath, rumors swirled. Witnesses claimed they had seen the Mothman near the bridge in the days before the disaster. Had it been trying to warn them? Or was it somehow responsible?
After the collapse, the sightings stopped. The Mothman vanished as mysteriously as it had appeared.
To this day, no one knows exactly what it was—some say an unknown animal, others believe it was a spirit, a creature beyond our understanding. But every so often, on a dark West Virginia night, someone will claim to see two red eyes glowing in the distance… and wonder if the Mothman has returned.
