Notes: | Finn McCool (or Fionn mac Cumhaill) is a legendary Irish giant and warrior known for his immense strength, courage, and cleverness. He is often depicted as a protector of Ireland and features prominently in many tales of the Fianna, a band of elite warriors. |
One day, while patrolling the rugged Irish coastline, Finn McCool noticed a shadowy figure far across the sea on the coast of Scotland. Squinting his eyes, Finn saw that it was not just any figure, but a giant—Benandonner, a massive creature known for his brute strength and temper. Standing tall on the Scottish shore, Benandonner gazed back at Finn with a look of challenge in his eyes.
"What are you doing so close to my land, Benandonner?" Finn bellowed, his voice carrying across the water.
Benandonner crossed his arms and smirked. "I've heard stories of your strength, Finn McCool, but I bet you're no match for me! Why don't you come over here and prove your might, if you dare?" he shouted back, his voice rumbling like thunder.
Angered by the taunt, Finn's hands curled into fists. "I'll show him," he muttered to himself. Fueled by a desire to defend his land and reputation, Finn grabbed a handful of enormous rocks and hurled them into the sea with all his might. One by one, the rocks crashed into the waves, forming a jagged path stretching across the water. "There!" Finn roared, his chest heaving with exertion. "I've built a causeway! Cross it, and we'll see who's stronger!"
Benandonner accepted the challenge without hesitation. He began to stride across the newly-formed causeway, each of his steps sending shockwaves through the sea and shaking the very earth. The closer he got, the clearer it became that Benandonner was far larger than Finn had expected—his height towering above the cliffs and his muscles rippling like boulders beneath his skin.
As Benandonner's massive frame loomed ever closer, Finn's initial bravado gave way to doubt. "What have I done?" he whispered, realizing that he couldn't match Benandonner's size and strength in a direct confrontation. He needed to outsmart him, and fast.
Racing back to his home, Finn burst through the door and explained the situation to his wife, Oonagh. Wise and quick-witted, Oonagh didn't panic. Instead, she smiled and said, "Don't worry, Finn. Leave it to me. I have a plan."
Oonagh dressed Finn in oversized baby clothes and laid him gently in a massive wooden cradle. She wrapped him up snugly, making sure only his face peeked out, and then set about preparing the house as if she were expecting a guest. Just as she finished, a deafening knock rattled the door. Oonagh opened it to see Benandonner's enormous frame filling the doorway.
"Where is Finn McCool?" Benandonner demanded, his voice like the roar of a waterfall.
"Oh, Finn isn't here right now," Oonagh said sweetly, not missing a beat. "He's out hunting, but I'd be happy to introduce you to our little baby boy while you wait." She gestured to the cradle, where Finn lay pretending to sleep peacefully.
Benandonner leaned over and peered into the cradle. His eyes widened, and he took a step back. The 'baby' in the cradle was already bigger than most full-grown men! He stared in disbelief at the 'child's' broad shoulders and massive hands. "If that's the size of Finn's baby," he whispered to himself, trembling, "what kind of giant must the father be?"
Images of an impossibly huge and powerful Finn McCool flashed through Benandonner's mind. Overcome with fear, he turned and bolted out the door without another word. He sprinted back towards the causeway, each of his footsteps causing the stones to crack and crumble beneath him. As he fled, Benandonner smashed the rocks behind him, breaking the path he had taken and ensuring that no one—least of all Finn McCool—could follow him back to Scotland.
Oonagh watched from the doorway, a satisfied smile on her lips. Finn, still wrapped in baby clothes, cautiously peeked out of the cradle. "Is he gone?" he asked, his voice muffled by the blankets.
Oonagh laughed and helped him up. "Yes, he's gone. You're safe now, Finn. Next time, maybe don't be so quick to pick a fight with giants bigger than yourself!"
Finn chuckled sheepishly. "I'll keep that in mind, dear." He looked out at the broken causeway, the remnants of his hasty challenge. "Well, I suppose we don't have to worry about Benandonner coming back anytime soon."
And so it was. The shattered rocks that Benandonner left behind became known as the Giant's Causeway, a testament to the cleverness of Oonagh and the wisdom of knowing when to use your wits instead of your strength. Travelers who saw the peculiar rock formations marveled at them and told stories of how they were made by the mighty Finn McCool and his battle of wits with the Scottish giant, Benandonner.
To this day, the Giant's Causeway stands as a reminder of the tale—how the courage of Finn McCool, paired with the wisdom of his wife, turned a dangerous challenge into a legendary story of cunning and bravery.
