Brer Wolf was feeling mighty hungry one day, and when he spotted Brer Rabbit nibbling on some lettuce in a field, he thought he'd finally get a meal. "I've got you now, Brer Rabbit!" Brer Wolf growled, creeping closer.
Brer Rabbit glanced up, saw Brer Wolf, and quickly thought of a plan. "Why, Brer Wolf, you look so thin and hungry! I've got a feast waiting at my house, and I'd be happy to share it with you."
Brer Wolf's mouth watered. "A feast, you say? Lead the way!" he demanded. Brer Rabbit nodded eagerly and led Brer Wolf through the woods, across a stream, and up a hill. As they approached a tall tree, Brer Rabbit pointed up. "Right up there, Brer Wolf, in that hollow, is where I keep all my food!"
Brer Wolf looked up and saw a hollow high in the tree, but no ladder or branch to climb. "How do I get up there?" he asked, frowning.
"Easy," Brer Rabbit said, "just close your eyes and leap! You'll land right in the hollow." Brer Wolf, eager for the food, closed his eyes, crouched low, and sprang up as high as he could. But instead of landing in the hollow, he crashed into the tree trunk and tumbled to the ground.
Brer Rabbit laughed and said, "Maybe you didn't jump high enough. Try again!" Brer Wolf, too hungry to think clearly, tried again and again, but each time he crashed into the tree, hurting himself more and more.
Finally, bruised and battered, Brer Wolf looked up and saw Brer Rabbit sitting on a branch, eating an apple and grinning down at him. "Fooled you, didn't I, Brer Wolf? You'll never learn!"
Brer Wolf, realizing he'd been tricked, growled in frustration and limped away, muttering angrily. Brer Rabbit just chuckled and hopped off, humming a tune, proud of having outwitted Brer Wolf once again.
