Brer Rabbit loved peanuts, but he didn't have a patch of his own. One day, he noticed that Brer Fox had planted a whole field of peanuts. Brer Rabbit's mouth watered just looking at them, so he decided to sneak into the field and help himself.

Night after night, Brer Rabbit slipped into the peanut patch and ate his fill. When Brer Fox discovered his peanuts were disappearing, he decided to set a trap. He spread sticky tar all over the ground around the peanut patch and waited.

That night, Brer Rabbit came hopping along, his nose twitching at the smell of fresh peanuts. But as soon as he stepped into the patch, his feet got stuck in the tar. "Uh-oh," Brer Rabbit muttered, realizing he was caught.

Brer Fox stepped out from behind a tree, grinning from ear to ear. "Well, well, well. Caught you red-handed, didn't I?"

Brer Rabbit thought quickly. "You sure did, Brer Fox. And I guess you'll be cooking me up for supper now, huh?"

"That's exactly right," Brer Fox said with a sneer. "I'm going to fry you up nice and crispy!"

"Well, I'd sure appreciate it if you'd do it in a cast-iron skillet. The flavor's better that way," Brer Rabbit said, licking his lips. Brer Fox's smile faded. "Wait a minute. You're trying to trick me again, aren't you?"

"Not at all!" Brer Rabbit said, shaking his head. "If you're going to eat me, at least let me enjoy the best way to go!"

Brer Fox, suspicious but curious, scratched his head. "Fine, I'll get the skillet." As soon as he turned away, Brer Rabbit wriggled free from the tar and bolted out of the patch, shouting, "So long, Brer Fox! Thanks for the peanuts!"

Brer Fox chased after him, but it was too late—Brer Rabbit had escaped once more. Brer Rabbit laughed
