Notes: | Ma and Pa should move slowly, speak with exaggerated age, and draw out the pacing for comedic effect. Timing is key. |
([Ma] and [Pa] are standing near an imaginary train station. [Ma] speaks slowly in an old, creaky voice.)
[Ma:] Pa, is a train comin' from the south today?
([Pa] hobbles over to the 'station,' checks a pretend schedule, looks to the south, then shuffles back.)
[Pa:] No, Ma.
[Ma:] Pa, is a train comin' from the north today?
([Pa] repeats the same steps, looks north, returns even slower.)
[Pa:] No, Ma.
[Ma:] Pa, is a train comin' from the east today?
([Pa] checks east, mutters to himself, returns after a long pause.)
[Pa:] No, Ma.
[Ma:] Pa, is a train comin' from the west today?
([Pa] groans, checks west, returns one last time.)
[Pa:] No, Ma.
[Ma:] Good. We can cross the tracks now.
