Notes:Deliver before or during breakfast, ideally when the mood is low. A little gentle humor helps land this one.

Every campout has one. Sometimes it's the same Scout every trip; sometimes it rotates. The morning grumbler. The one who wakes up making sure everyone knows how tired he is, how cold it was, how early it is, how bad the sleeping pad was. He's not doing it to cause trouble. He's just announcing his experience to anyone in earshot.

Here's the thing about the morning grumbler: he's contagious. Energy in a campsite is a shared thing, especially in the morning before the fire is going and people have woken up all the way. One Scout loudly establishing that this morning is terrible can turn what might have been a decent morning into a grim one for everyone around him. Not because the morning actually got worse. Because he said it was.

A Scout is cheerful. Morning cheerfulness is one of the hardest versions of this. You're tired. Maybe cold. The sleeping bag wasn't quite right. You don't want to be awake yet. All of that is real. But the question isn't whether you feel it - it's whether you broadcast it. You can feel tired and still choose not to make it the group's problem.

The Scout who gets up quietly, gets the water going, and says something neutral or kind is doing something for the entire patrol. He's setting a tone. It doesn't take much - just the decision not to lead with the complaint. That choice, first thing in the morning, matters more than it seems.
