The Grumpy vs. The Grateful

Notes:Choosing gratitude over grumpiness is a decision we make every day.

Two Scouts wake up in the same tent. One thinks: "I'm tired. My sleeping bag is uncomfortable. Breakfast won't be as good as home. I wish I wasn't here." The other thinks: "I'm camping with friends. I get to be outside. We're going hiking today. This is great."

Same tent. Same circumstances. Completely different experiences. The difference is the choice to be grateful instead of grumpy. And here's the secret: grateful people aren't grateful because everything is perfect. They're grateful because they choose to notice what's good instead of dwelling on what's not.

A Scout is cheerful, and cheerfulness starts with gratitude. When you train yourself to look for things to be thankful for - even small things, especially in difficult situations - you'll find that being cheerful becomes natural. Because cheerfulness isn't about circumstances. It's about perspective.
