Brave - Sounds in the Dark

The woods at night are not the same woods as during the day. Things you walked past without noticing are suddenly making sounds. Branches crack. Something rustles in the leaves. An animal crosses somewhere in the dark that you can't see. The wind moves differently through trees at 2 AM than it does at 2 PM.
This isn't your imagination. The woods are genuinely more active at night. A lot of animals are nocturnal. Everything is a little more alive in the dark than you expect. And if you're in a tent for one of your first times, that aliveness can feel like something more threatening than it is.
Bravery tonight doesn't mean not hearing those sounds. It means hearing them and deciding they're the woods being the woods, not something to be afraid of. It means lying still and letting the strangeness settle into something familiar. That process - letting unfamiliar become familiar, letting the alarm quiet down - is something your mind learns to do. But it has to practice.
The Scouts who sleep the best at camp aren't the ones who weren't nervous their first few nights. They're the ones who've been nervous and made it through enough times that the sounds don't trigger anything anymore. You get there by staying in the tent. By the third or fourth campout, the woods at night will feel less like threat and more like company.
