Notes:Respecting all living things is a fundamental form of reverence.

At camp, you see a spider in your tent. Your instinct might be to smash it. But a reverent Scout pauses and thinks: this creature has as much right to exist as I do. Maybe you carefully relocate it outside instead. That pause, that consideration - that's reverence for life.

Reverence for life means treating living things with respect and care. Not torturing insects for fun. Not carving into living trees. Not destroying bird nests or harassing wildlife. It means recognizing that every living thing - even ones we don't particularly like - has value in the web of life.

A Scout is reverent toward all life. This doesn't mean you can't fish or that you must be vegetarian. But it does mean we don't take life casually or cause unnecessary suffering. We harvest respectfully. We observe wildlife without disturbing it. We leave habitats intact for future generations. Because showing reverence for life in all its forms is showing reverence for the mystery and gift of existence itself.
