The Life rank badge is shaped like a heart. Have you ever wondered why?

By now you know how to camp, cook, navigate, and lead. You've earned a stack of merit badges and served in leadership positions. So the rank just before Eagle could have been a symbol of skill or strength. Instead, it's a heart.

Here's how I think about it. The heart of Scouting has never really been the knots or the merit badges. It's the Scout Oath and Law, lived out every day, from the inside. By the time a Scout reaches Life, those words aren't just something you memorized. They're part of who you are.

Notice what you had to do to earn this rank. More service to others. More leadership. And you had to teach a younger Scout a skill, patiently, the way someone once taught you. That's what a Life Scout does. You give back.

And now there's one more rank on the trail. Eagle. Before you get there, you'll lead a service project that leaves your community better than you found it. It's the biggest thing you've taken on in Scouting.

Lead it with your heart. That's what this badge is for.
