Most of you don't see much of the troop committee, and that's the way it should be. Our job happens in the background. We handle the money, the paperwork, and the permission slips. And one of our most important jobs is making sure this troop has the right Scoutmaster.
So first, to (outgoing Scoutmaster's name): thank you. You gave this troop more evenings, weekends, and cold nights in a tent than any of us could count. Every Scout in this room is a little more capable because of you.
Now, to the Scouts. You might be wondering how we chose your new Scoutmaster. We didn't look for the best camper or the best knot-tier, though (incoming Scoutmaster's name) is pretty good at both. We looked for someone who believes this troop belongs to you, who will let you lead even when it would be faster to do it themselves, and who will keep you safe while you learn. We found that person.
And finally, to the parents. A Scoutmaster can't do this alone, and shouldn't have to. This troop runs on volunteers: drivers, merit badge counselors, committee members, the parent who shows up with the trailer hitch. If you've been waiting for the right time to help, this is it. Come find me afterward.
A new Scoutmaster is a fresh start for the whole troop, not just for the person up front. Let's all make it a good one.
