Miracle on the Hudson: Trained to Stay Calm

On January 15, 2009, just after takeoff, US Airways Flight 1549 hit a flock of geese and lost power in both engines. The plane was too low to return to the airport. The situation was dire.

But Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger didn't panic. He calmly assessed the options, communicated with air traffic control, and made a split-second decision. With no engines, he glided the plane down and safely landed it on the Hudson River.

All 155 people on board survived.

Scouts learn to stay calm, assess the situation, and act with skill and confidence. Sully showed the world what that looks like in real life. He wasn't lucky-he was ready.
