The February Feeling

There's a stretch in most troops, usually sometime in the winter, when things feel flat. The big fall events are over. Summer camp is months away. The weather keeps you inside. Meeting nights feel a little thin. You can feel it in the room - the energy just isn't the same.
I call this the February Feeling, though it can happen any time of year. It's not a crisis. It's not a sign the troop is falling apart. It's the natural rhythm of a group of people working together over a long stretch. Every team experiences it - sports teams, families, professional groups. The question is never whether it happens. It's what you do when it does.
The troops that come out the other side stronger are the ones that use this stretch to do the unglamorous work: get the requirements signed off, deepen the skills, plan the big events for spring. The slow season is when the foundation gets built. It doesn't have ceremony, but it matters.
When you look back on this troop years from now, you probably won't remember the specific meeting where the energy was low in February. But you'll absolutely remember what was built in that quiet stretch. Show up. Do the work. Spring comes faster than it looks.
