I want to say something to the younger Scouts in the room tonight.
You are watching someone receive the highest rank in Scouting. It probably looks like a long way from where you're sitting. Maybe an impossible way. Merit badges and a project and years of work - and you're still figuring out your Tenderfoot requirements.
Here is what I want you to know: the Scout standing up front was exactly where you are. They sat in the back row at someone else's Eagle Court of Honor and thought the same thing you're thinking right now.
They didn't get here because they were smarter, or more talented, or had an easier road. They got here because they kept showing up. To meetings they didn't feel like attending. To campouts where things went wrong. To merit badge sessions that took longer than expected. They kept showing up until it was done.
That's the whole secret. It's not a complicated one.
Pay attention tonight. Remember what this looks like. Because someday, if you keep showing up, someone is going to be sitting where you are - watching you.
