The Scout standing up front tonight didn't get there alone.
There are people in this room who drove to meetings when they were tired. Who signed forms and made phone calls and showed up to project workdays in the rain. Who listened on the drive home - sometimes to excitement, sometimes to complaints, sometimes to silence - and figured out which one needed a response and which one just needed the ride.
There were moments when finishing seemed unlikely. Parents in this room know which moments those were, because they were in the car, or at the kitchen table, or on the other end of a phone call. They didn't always have the right answer. Sometimes the right answer was just staying in the room.
Eagle Scouts are made by the Scouts themselves. But they're supported into existence by the people who refused to let them disappear quietly when the work got hard.
Tonight belongs to the Scout. But the people sitting behind them earned something too.
