Columbia: Learning from the Sky
On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia was returning from a 16-day mission in space. As it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, something went terribly wrong. The shuttle broke apart. All seven astronauts aboard were lost.
The crew came from different backgrounds, including the first Indian-born woman in space and Israel's first astronaut. They were scientists, explorers, and dreamers.
The cause was a piece of foam that had broken off during launch-something small, but deadly. NASA launched an investigation, and again, changed how space travel was approached. We learned. We mourned. We improved.
In Scouting, we strive for excellence-but we also accept failure as part of growth. What matters most is what we do next: how we honor those who tried, how we fix what's broken, and how we keep reaching higher, with humility and courage.
