Charles Duke grew up in South Carolina, where he developed an early interest in science and aviation. As a member of his local Scout troop, he worked hard to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, building the discipline and focus that would shape his career.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy and serving as an Air Force pilot, Duke became an astronaut in 1966. In 1972, as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 16, he became the tenth person to walk on the Moon. His mission included three days of exploration, collecting samples, and conducting experiments on the lunar surface.
Duke often credited his success to setting goals and steadily working toward them, a habit that began in his Scouting years and continued throughout his career.
