The Singing Scoutmaster: Backpack Buddies

Notes: Celebrating friendship and how we can help carry each other's loads.

One sunny afternoon, a group of Cub Scouts gathered for a short hike and a campfire. Each Scout had their own backpack filled with snacks, water, and gear. Some were light. Some were heavy. Some Scouts were strong, and others were still getting used to hiking.

About halfway up the trail, young Lucas started to fall behind. His backpack was slipping, and he looked frustrated. Another Scout, Maya, noticed and jogged back to him. "Need a hand?" she asked.

"It's just too heavy," Lucas sighed. "I packed too much."

Maya smiled. "That's okay. I've got room in mine." Without a second thought, she took out one of Lucas's items and slipped it into her pack.

Soon, another Scout noticed and helped too. Before long, Lucas was smiling and back in step with the group. When they reached the top, their Den Leader said, "That's what backpack buddies do. Sometimes in life, we all carry loads—homework, worries, or just a tough day. A true friend is someone who helps carry that load."

Scouting is about more than badges or knots. It's about looking out for one another. Be the Scout who helps lighten the load. That's what friends—and backpack buddies—are for.
