Welcome to the Pack Ceremony
| Category: | Scout Ceremonies |
|---|---|
| Props: | Pack neckerchief, slide, or pack patch for each new Cub Scout (whatever your pack gives new members) |
| Props: | Name tags for new families (optional) |
| Notes: | For welcoming new Cub Scouts and their families, usually at the first pack meeting in the fall or after a recruiting night. Replace [PACK NUMBER] and [CUB SCOUT NAME]. Keep it short: new families are still figuring out where to sit. The point is that every new Cub Scout hears their name said out loud by the whole pack, and every new family meets a real person who will answer their questions. See also the cub-rank-lion and cub-rank-tiger minutes. |
Setup
New Cub Scouts and their families sit together near the front. Have the pack items ready in order of the names you will call. Ask current Cub Scouts to sit where they can stand up and turn to face the new members.
Participants
- Cubmaster - runs the ceremony
- Den Leaders - each greets the new Cub Scouts joining their den
- New Cub Scouts and their families
- The whole pack
The Ceremony
Cubmaster: 'Tonight our pack is getting bigger. Will all of our new Cub Scouts please come up front? Bring your grown-ups with you.'
(New Cub Scouts and families come forward and face the pack.)Cubmaster: 'Pack [PACK NUMBER], please stand and say hello to our newest Cub Scouts. When I say a name, you say, "Welcome, [CUB SCOUT NAME]!"'
Cubmaster: '[CUB SCOUT NAME].'
Pack: 'Welcome, [CUB SCOUT NAME]!'
(Repeat for each new Cub Scout. Their den leader steps forward, shakes hands, and gives the pack item.)Cubmaster: 'Every Cub Scout learns three things first. The first is our sign. Raise your right hand high, with two fingers up, like the ears of a wolf.'
(Cubmaster shows the Cub Scout sign. The whole pack makes it. New Cub Scouts copy.)Cubmaster: 'When you see this sign, it means it is time to listen. The second thing is our handshake.'
(Cubmaster shows the Cub Scout handshake with one new Cub Scout, then the den leaders shake hands with each new Cub Scout in their den.)Cubmaster: 'And the third thing is our motto. It is only three words, and it is the most important thing a Cub Scout ever learns. Pack, what is our motto?'
Pack: 'Do Your Best!'
Cubmaster: 'New Cub Scouts, now you say it.'
New Cub Scouts: 'Do Your Best!'
Cubmaster: 'That is all we ask. Grown-ups - Cub Scouting is a family program, which means you joined too. Welcome. Your den leader is standing right there, and they would be glad to answer any question you have tonight.'
Cubmaster: 'Pack [PACK NUMBER], let's give our new members a big welcome!'
(The pack cheers. New families return to their seats.)
