Why Synthetic Flags Should Not Be Burned

Many modern U.S. flags are made from nylon, polyester, or other synthetic fabrics. When burned, these materials can release noxious fumes that are harmful to breathe. Synthetic flags also ignite quickly, burn extremely hot, and can produce dripping molten material that poses a burn hazard. In some states and municipalities, burning synthetic materials is illegal.

If you are unsure whether a flag is cotton or synthetic, check the label or feel the fabric. Nylon flags have a smooth, silky texture and are often lighter than cotton flags of the same size. When in doubt, treat it as synthetic.

How to Retire a Synthetic Flag

The U.S. Flag Code requires that a flag no longer fit for display be 'destroyed in a dignified way.' Burning is preferred but not required. Cutting the flag into pieces so it is no longer recognizable as a flag is an acceptable method of dignified destruction.

Cutting Procedure

  1. Lay the flag flat on a clean surface such as a table. The flag should never touch the ground.
  2. Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut the blue field with the stars away from the stripes. Set it aside.
  3. Cut the remaining stripes apart so that no piece resembles a flag.
  4. Remove and set aside any metal grommets or hardware.
  5. Place the fabric pieces in a bag or box for recycling.

Once the blue field has been separated from the stripes, the material is no longer a flag and may be disposed of or recycled through any appropriate means.

Conducting a Ceremony

A synthetic flag still deserves a dignified retirement. You can conduct a full ceremony using any of the scripts in this section. Simply replace the burning step with the cutting procedure above. The cutting can be performed solemnly by the color guard or by a designated leader while the audience observes in respectful silence.

For a mixed batch of cotton and synthetic flags, sort the flags beforehand. Retire the cotton flags by burning in the usual manner, and retire the synthetic flags by cutting either before or after the burning ceremony.
